Giovanni Bassano is een componist voor kenners van Oude Muziek. Dat moest maar eens veranderen.
Rond 1600 ruilde Europa de renaissancemuziek voor de barokmuziek in. Vrij plotseling wisselde de mode van apollinische polyfone zangbouwsels naar dionysische uitbarstingen van emotie. Instrumenten kregen een veel grotere rol en teksten moesten vooral verstaanbaar zijn.
In Venetië kwam die overgang wat minder hard aan. Daar waren aan het eind van de zestiende eeuw al meerkorige motetten met instrumentale ensembles verschenen. De grootmeester van dat werk was Giovanni Gabrieli, maar ook Giovanni Bassano (ca. 1561-1617) heeft zijn sporen verdiend in dat werk. Hij was zelfs al een beetje moderner: in de stijl van zijn motetten horen we Heinrich Schütz al terug.
In dit concert weinig geestelijke muziek, maar vooral een andere kant van Bassano: de wereldlijke. We horen diverse madrigalen, wat bewerkingen van bekende liederen en een paar oorspronkelijk instrumentale composities. Alles door Ensemble La Primavera, dat zich sinds jaar en dag in de vroege barok heeft gespecialiseerd.
