Muziek uit de Sahara

De muziek van Mariem Hassan, Sahara, (foto) bevat een veelvoud van invloeden en beweegt zich steeds op het snijvlak van 'Arabisch' en 'zwart' Afrika voor zover je van zulke typeringen kunt spreken. Gezongen wordt er in het Hassaniya, het Arabische dialect van Saharanen en Mauretaniërs. De muziek klinkt rudimentair: met zang en hand geklap, tbal (percussie), plus westerse gitaar en bas gitaar bezingt men het leven in de vluchtelingenkampen, niet alleen in mineur, maar vaak ook juist behoorlijk geëxalteerd. Deze Saharaanse muziek, haul geheten, vermengt traditie en moderniteit zo vanzelfsprekend dat eens te meer duidelijk is dat dit onderscheid toch vooral gezien moet worden als een preoccupatie van de westerse, analytische geest.
