Bespelers van hetzelfde instrument vormen vaak ensembles. Dat begint al op de muziekschool. Sommige ensembles blijven bij elkaar.
Een ensemble van vier trombones kun je natuurlijk verwachten op een festival als Slide Factory, dat geheel in het teken van de trombone staat. Maar ook buiten deze trombonistische biotoop is het trombonekwartet een dingetje. Althans, dat was het in de zeventiende eeuw. De baroktrombone, een type met nauwere boring en een bescheidener toon, was in die eeuw erg populair en trad vaak in ensembles op. We horen hier één werk uit die traditie: een sonate van Daniel Speer. Verder horen we veel nieuw gecomponeerde muziek en een medley van Once upon a time in the West.
