Gershwin in Parijs

An-American-in-Paris

In Thema van dinsdag 7 januari om 20 uur: Gershwin in Parijs.

Gershwin had al veel roem - en geld - verzameld met zijn musicalsongs. Maar hij droomde constant van een plaatsje tussen zijn klassieke vakbroeders. Zijn gouden kans kwam in 1924/5 met zijn ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ en zijn ‘Pianoconcert in F’.

Toch bleef hij maar hunkeren naar nog meer acceptatie op het concertpodium en wilde daarom compositieles nemen bij mensen als Ravel en Stravinsky. Hij benaderde ze toen hij in 1928 in Parijs gefêteerd werd en kreeg van allebei te horen dat ze er niets in zagen. Zijn indrukken van de hectische, maar uiterst hippe Franse hoofdstad verwerkte Gershwin in ‘An American in Paris’. Daarin schreef hij vier taxiclaxons voor (zie foto).
