Pocket Concerts (27) - Rembrandt Frerichs & Efraïm Trujillo

Coming to you from the studios of the Concertzender / World of Jazz: Pocket Concerts. Featuring this edition: Rembrandt Frerichs & Efraïm Trujillo

Dutch pianist and composer Rembrandt Frerichs and saxophonist Efraïm Trujillo bring an inspired energy to this Pocket Concerts performance—an encounter between two improvisers who move fluidly between genres and traditions.

Rembrandt Frerichs is celebrated for his cross-cultural approach to composition and performance. With his Rembrandt Frerichs Trio, he explores the intersection of jazz, classical, and Middle Eastern music, performing on both modern and historical instruments. As a composer, Frerichs has written works for ensembles such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Amsterdam Sinfonietta, weaving improvisation into classical frameworks. His albums Same Self, Same Silence and A Wind Invisible Sweeps Us Through the World exemplify his lyrical, borderless artistry.

Efraïm Trujillo, equally versatile, is known for his soulful sound on tenor and soprano saxophones. A founding member of The Preacher Men—winners of the Edison Jazz Award in 2019 for Blue— FraFra Sound and the New Cool Collective. He also performs with the high-energy fusion group The Ploctones, showcasing his love for groove, blues, and adventurous improvisation.

Together, Frerichs and Trujillo strip music down to its most essential form: a dialogue of melody, intuition, and shared imagination.

Ruud Bos (1936-2023) had already written the melody of ''Telkens Weer'' for the film Rooie Sien (1975), starring Willeke Alberti. Friso Wiegersma (1925-2006) was asked by Bos to write lyrics for it, which came about after a hard struggle. It became Alberti’s signature song, the film is practically forgotten, but "Telkens Weer'' has gained an iconic status in the Netherlands as one of the most successful unions between lyrics and music.
