Jump! duikt in de voorgeschiedenis van de rock and roll, vanaf de boogiewoogie uit de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw tot de zwarte populaire muziek van midden-jaren vijftig. Naoorlogse rhythm and blues vormt de ruggengraat van het programma, maar er zal ook aandacht zijn voor vroege bluesmuziek, gospel, jump-jazz en western swing.

Saxofonist, zanger en entertainer Louis Jordan (1908-1975) wordt wel The Father of Rhythm and Blues genoemd. Hij was mateloos populair in de naoorlogse jaren en zijn teksten onderscheidden zich doorgaans door humor en spitsvondigheid.
